Common Conditions and Treatments

Common Presenting Conditions

Chiropractors are primary contact practitioners. This means that people can directly access their services. The following is a comprehensive list of the symptoms and conditions that present to our clinic. We do not actively treat all of these conditions. However, as Chiropractors we are well placed to manage them. The management could be in any of the following forms: diagnosis, advice, treatment (see list), monitoring of progress or timely and appropriate medical referral. To facilitate referral, our team (consisting of chiropractors, massage therapists and exercise specialists) have a close working relationship with local orthopaedic, spinal-neurosurgical, imaging consultants and pain management consultants

Conditions We Treat

2010 saw the publication of the UK report by Professor Gert Bronfort on the 'Effectiveness of Manual Therapies.' It concluded that spinal manipulation/mobilisation is effective in adults for acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain; for the prevention of migraine and cervicogenic headache, and also in the treatment of a number of upper and lower extremity joint conditions. Thoracic spinal manipulation/mobilisation is effective for acute/subacute neck pain, and, when combined with exercise, cervical spinal/manipulation is effective for chronic neck pain. Treatments and general advice for sciatica can also be offered.

More recently the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Advertising Authority (ASA) have issued guidance about the conditions that may be treatable by chiropractors. The conditions listed are: ankle sprain (short term management), elbow pain and tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) arising from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, inability to relax, joint pains including hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis, acute & chronic backache, back pain (not arising from injury or accident), generalised aches and pains, lumbago, mechanical neck pain, migraine prevention, minor sports injuries and tensions, muscle spasms, plantar fasciitis (the short term management), rotator cuff injuries, sciatica and shoulder soft tissue complaints.
