Short bursts of activity can still have health benefits

Posted on Aug 27, 2021

Even a small amount of physical activity is better than no physical activity. According to the Chief Medical Officer for the UK even short bouts of exercise can be beneficial.

New evidence shows that people can still gain health benefits from lower intensities, volumes and frequencies of activity than had previously been thought.

The relevance of these research findings is for adult individuals with low levels of physical activity or a disability. Each week, the guidance is for adults to engage in:

  • 75 minutes of a vigorous intensity activity such as running.
  • At least 2½ hours of moderate intensity activity, such as cycling or brisk walking.

The guidelines also encourage that, at least twice a week, all adults should take part in activities that maintain or increase their muscle strength and involve the use of major upper and lower body muscle groups.
