GOOD HEALTH AND COVID – 19
Posted on Mar 19, 2020GOOD HEALTH AND COVID–19
We are all working hard at avoiding contact with viruses and bacteria. Here are a few ‘good health’ considerations to help prepare us for an epidemic.
Consider taking a multivitamin and mineral supplement: This is probably a good idea which will help you to stay healthy, especially if you eat poorly. Deficiencies in vitamin D may lead to a weak immune system. Good food sources of vitamin D are salmon, canned tuna, egg yolks and beef liver. Try to avoid spikes in sugar intake that suppress our immune systems. Foods such as pop, refined carbohydrates, processed foods and alcoholic beverages should be limited.
Eat green vegetables: We know the supermarkets are very busy and shelves are bare but your local butcher or farm shop may be well stocked with vegetables. Green leafy veg is rich in those vitamins that support a healthy immune system.
Keep active: We must all follow government guidelines and consider social distancing. However, we would recommend walking whilst allowed in open spaces or follow a home exercise routine at least three time a week.
Get plenty of sleep: Hard to follow through when so many of us are facing unprecedented difficulties. However, studies have shown that getting enough sleep gives us greater resistance to viruses.
Calm down: Understandably, we are currently all very stressed and anxious. If you can find a way to help regulate personal stress such as home yoga or meditation this may go a long way to toward better health.
Take your doctor’s advice: If you have a chronic illness make sure that you keep a good supply of your prescribed medicines. For example, if you are asthmatic have a good supply of your inhalers. Then remember to take your inhalers wherever you go, and take your preventative inhaler as prescribed
Drink plenty of water: The average adult needs around 1.5 litres of water a day. Drink regular small amounts to flush out your system and keep your immune system strong.
We hope this is of some help. Stay well.
