The best therapies for Frozen Shoulder?

Posted on Jul 23, 2021

Frozen Shoulder is a condition causing painful, restricted movements of one and at times both shoulders. It affects 10% of women and 8% of men. The pain can be severe, affecting daily activities, sleep and work.

The results of a recent trial looking into three treatments for frozen shoulder were published in the journal Lancet.

  • Arthroscopic capsular release (ACR) is a key hole surgical procedure under general anaesthetic.
  • Manipulation under anaesthetic (MUA) is a procedure where surgeons move the shoulder joint to full range of motion.
  • Hands on mobilisations with exercises and a steroid injection.

All three treatments led to significant improvements in patient reported shoulder pain and function over one year, but not one of the treatments was better than any of the others.
